Dear Ms. Delaware,
My name is Louis Polson. I am 18 years old, and I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. However, I recently moved into a nice home in Laurelton, NY with my parents, to start a new life in a more quiet and spacious location compared to my previous residence. I just capped off a set of stressful, yet amazing, and humbling four years of high school at Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH), earning my diploma with honors, and the title of “Salutatorian”. If these accomplishments were not enough to surprise you, I was also able to take college classes at New York City College of Technology for two years while juggling high school, to earn an Associate’s Degree in Computer Systems & Technology. These achievements were most definitely not easy to get. Most students my age have probably never gotten the kind of opportunity I was blessed with at a young age. Thankfully, I decided to take full advantage of starting early, pushing myself further and further by the day to strive for the best, and tackle my goal of finishing school as early as possible so I could start my dream career as a computer programmer. As I start a new chapter at City College, I hope to keep my determination alive, as I work towards obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, and equip myself with the knowledge and experience necessary for my field/occupation of interest.
With this goal in mind, I must also mention other objectives I want to complete during and after my two years at City College. They are not many in number, but they are certainly important to me, and I must do everything I can to fulfill them. Aside from receiving my Bachelor’s Degree, I also want to become exposed to many other coding software than the ones I am already familiar with, such as Python, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. By expanding my expertise, I will be putting myself at an advantage when seeking jobs relative to my career of interest, being fairly equipped and prepared to complete all tasks for the job. Academically, I will be working on increasing my GPA during my tenure as a student at the college. Although I currently sit above a 3.5 GPA, I’ve had multiple chances and opportunities within the past semesters to improve, but I failed to capitalize and reach a mark that I feel comfortable at. I trust, however, that within this new school environment, I will be able to obtain high and efficient scores in each of the courses I take, in order to boost my GPA, earning honors, and being granted scholarships.
Within the big field of engineering, there have been many advancements as of recent, to accommodate the post-modern world. New technologies have been developed, such as artificial intelligence, space endeavors with new machines, modernized buildings, and so much more. Despite these great additions to the field, in some places people are struggling to survive, or live normal lives due to a lack of resources. These can include clean water, air, housing, and medical treatment. Engineering, shockingly, has the potential to fix these issues, and provide the general public with the necessary resources to combat their issues. For example, engineers have multiple methods in which they can exploit to provide clean water to those in need, one of which is using desalination, creating clean water from saline water. In addition, engineers can continue to work hard to protect those in danger of contracting COVID-19, and save lives from being lost to this vicious virus, by creating innovative inventions such as face shields, new facilities, and the “COVID Shield”. By observing global issues and noticing that change needs to take place, many engineers are realizing and starting to use their skill sets to play their parts in working to solve our current problems.
As stated before, I am striving to accomplish great things while at City College. I am not stopping at anything, or letting anything distract me from my goals and dreams. I hope that this letter has given you a clear insight on me and what I stand for. Thank you so much for your time, and I look forward to completing this semester successfully.
Sincerely,
Louis Polson
